Slide Science is an online PowerPoint course. But I will not teach you how to use the PowerPoint ribbon menu, how to format shapes, or any other PowerPoint functionality.

The course curriculum

Chapter 1. Crafting a logical argument and compelling storyline

Goal: Articulate the objective you want to achieve with your slide deck and build a storyline that logically leads to that objective.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • How to clearly define the objective of your PowerPoint slide deck
  • The different types of logical arguments (deductive and inductive) and when to use each type
  • Different types of storylines and when to use each type (e.g. neutral, burning platform, springboard)
  • How to translate your logical argument into a compelling storyline using the “Dot-Dash SCQA Structure”

Chapter 2. Structuring your slide deck using the Pyramid Principle

Goal: Build the outline of your slide deck based on the logical storyline that we crafted in the first chapter.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • The universal “Pyramid Principle” structure of every professional PowerPoint slide deck
  • The concept of “logic between the slides” and how to use slide lead-ins to tell our compelling story
  • The concept of “logic within the slides” and how to support every lead-in with evidence
  • The 5 most common slide layouts and when to use them (e.g. 2-panel slides, call-out boxes, tombstones, etc.)

Chapter 3. Supporting your storyline with evidence-based visualisations

Goal: Design simple but irrefutable slides that support your storyline with quantitative and qualitative evidence.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • How to choose the correct chart for any quantitative data or insight
  • The 8-point charting checklist that guarantees your charts are clear and complete every time
  • Common conceptual graphics for visualising qualitative insights (e.g. flow diagrams, tree diagrams, process maps, 2×2 matrices, etc.)
  • How to focus the readers’ attention using highlights, arrows, boxes and more

Chapter 5. Using text effectively in PowerPoint slides

Goal: Support your chart visualisations with a strategic use of explanatory text that is both highly compelling and simple to understand.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • When you should and shouldn’t use text on your slides
  • The “draft, drain, refine” process for turning verbose text into sharp text
  • The 7-point checklist for addressing common issues with text on slides (e.g. remove adverbs, inconsistent tenses, logical sequencing, etc.)

Chapter 6. Reviewing and finalizing your slide deck

Goal: Finalize your slide deck by reviewing your slides, and writing introduction and recommendation slides that inspire action.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • How to write an introduction slide that articulates your logical argument and supports your objective in an easy-to-understand way
  • How to write a recommendation slide that inspires action in your audience
  • The 10-point slide review checklist to help you find common mistakes (e.g. slide inconsistencies, missing slide numbers, etc.)
  • Simple tips and tricks for making your slides look more professional

Optional think-cell add-on

Chapter 7. Mastering think-cell for charting (requires think-cell)

Goal: Confidently apply the chart visualisations covered in Chapter 3 using the think-cell plugin for PowerPoint.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • Introduction to think-cell menus, features and functionality
  • Inserting and formatting basic charts using think-cell (e.g. bar, column, line, area, combo, scatter, bubble charts)
  • Visualising comparisons, differences and growth rates
  • Using non-chart think-cell functions (e.g. dynamic agendas, smart objects, etc.)

Chapter 8: Advanced charting using think-cell (requires think-cell)

Goal: Master advanced chart formats using think-cell and automating charts by linking to Excel data.

In this chapter you will learn:

  • Deep dive into Gantt charts: Selecting the most appropriate scale, formatting for sub-projects, highlighting (e.g. areas of concern), etc.
  • Deep dive into Marimekko charts: structuring data, displaying labels clearly, highlighting segments, etc.
  • Deep dive into waterfall charts: structuring data for step-up and step-down charts, using the magical “e”, adding a reference column, showing two scenarios within one waterfall chart, etc.
  • Automating think-cell charts by linking to Excel: Linking think-cell charts to Excel data, automatically updating charts, changing chart fill color based on Excel data, populating Gantt charts from Excel, etc.
